Quote of the Day: "Today is a day worth livin' for!"- Captain Barbossa
Ooooh, the Oscars. I completely blame the Lord of the Rings for my obsession with them. They just...completely fascinate me. I love good movies, I love acting, I love film in general. it's nice to see the best of the industry get honored (or not). And I'm not gonna lie, I'm always kind of awed by the glamour of it all. When I was still into acting and thought I would grow up to be an actress, I used to dream that someday I'd win an Oscar. Or at least get invited to them once. Now that I'm older I know that the likelihood of that is about the same as the Doctor showing up in my dorm room with the TARDIS. Still, a girl can dream, can't she?
I've watched the Oscars every year since 2004, when Return of the King took it ALL. But this is the first year that I've actually seen enough of the movies that I feel qualified to make predictions/fill out a ballot. So here they are...
Best Actor
[ ] Richard Jenkins, The Visitor
[ ] Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
[ ] Sean Penn, Milk
[ ] Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
[ ] Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Should win (in my humble opinion): Sean Penn, hands down. His embodiement of Milk was...incredible. Especially after watching "The Times of Harvey MIlk" and seeing footage of him in person, it's uncanny. Amazing, amazing performance.
Will win: Mickey Rourke. I haven't seen The Wrestler, but I've heard really good things about his performance. He's an underdog that I'm guessing will beat out Milk.
Best Actress
[ ] Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
[ ] Angelina Jolie, Changeling
[ ] Melissa Leo, Frozen River
[ ] Meryl Streep, Doubt
[ ] Kate Winslet, The Reader
Should win (IMHO): The only one of these movies I've seen is the Reader, so I can't really say. Kate Winslet certainly did a good job in that movie, but I'm gonna root for Anne Hathaway. I've heard nothing but good about that performance, and as Morgan said, I feel like I've grown up with her (Princess Diaries on...)
Will win: Kate Winslet.
Best Supporting Actor
[ ] Josh Brolin, Milk
[ ] Robert Downey Jr., Tropic Thunder
[ ] Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt
[ ] Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
[ ] Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road
Should win and will win: Heath Ledger. When people started talking about a posthumous Oscar for him, I thought, "that's ridiculous, it's a bunch of hype. They're only saying it because he died." Then I actually saw the Dark Knight...and it completely blew me away. He deserves it. Completely.
Best Supporting Actress
[ ] Amy Adams, Doubt
[ ] Penélope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
[ ] Viola Davis, Doubt
[ ] Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
[ ] Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler
Will win: I'm going to go with Penelope Cruz, but that's purely based on what I've been reading in the papers. The only one of these I've seen is Benjamin Button, so I'm not really qualified to predict.
ORIGINAL SCORE
[ ] The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
[ ] Defiance
[ ] Milk
[ ] Slumdog Millionaire
[ ] WALL-E
Should and Will win: This is gonna be a night for Slumdog Millionaire. Rightly so in this case; I adore the soundtrack. It's an intersting mixture of instrumentals and MIA rap, but it works really really well.
ORIGINAL SONG
[ ] "Down to Earth" - WALL-E
[ ] "Jai Ho" - Slumdog Millionaire
[ ] "O Saya" - Slumdog Millionaire
Should win: "O Saya." I don't know why I love this song so much, but I think it's absolutely fantastic. It was a great opening to the movie.
Will win: "Jai Ho." Personally, I'm not a huge fan, but the dancing that accompanied it will definitely give it the push.
ANIMATED FEATURE
[ ] Bolt
[ ] Kung Fu Panda
[ ] WALL-E
Should and will win: If WALL-E does not win I will fall off my chair and throw Hershey's Kisses at the TV.
DIRECTOR
[ ] David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
[ ] Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon
[ ] Gus Van Sant, Milk
[ ] Stephen Daldry, The Reader
[ ] Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Should and will win: Danny Boyle. I really liked what he did with this movie, and apparently, so did everyone else.
BEST PICTURE
[ ] The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
[ ] Frost/Nixon
[ ] Milk
[ ] The Reader
[ ] Slumdog Millionaire
Should win: This one was tough for me. I didn't see Frost/Nixon, The Reader can go suck it. Dark Knight should have been nominated in its place. Benjamin Button was good, but not nearly as good as Milk or Slumdog Millionaire. So which of the two do I want to win? Both were really well done, both enjoyable. But in the end, Milk is the one that hits closest to home for me. It was really uplifting in a tragic way, the ensemble acting was fantastic (*cough* Emile Hirsch/James Franco *cough*), and to be honest, it felt more real than Slumdog Millionaire did. Plus, it made me cry like a baby. And I don't cry for movies. Ever.
Will win: Again, I will fall off my chair if Slumdog Millionaire doesn't win. It's won everything so far. *sigh* I can dream, though, can't I?
And that's that! I will be neglecting homework and watching the festivities tonight. May you all do the same! ;-)

on 2009-02-24 06:28 pm (UTC)turned out to be kind of a bad show anyway. Except for Hugh Jackman singing. That was funny.
